So long, summer! Fall is here, which means it’s Apple Season! We are excited for all things apple: apple cider, apple pie, and four new Apple iPhones that launched on September 16th! Our new arrivals are the iPhone 14, the iPhone 14 Plus, the iPhone 14 Pro, and the iPhone Pro Max. Here’s what you can look forward to in Apple’s latest offerings:
All four iPhones come with iOS16. This latest operating system boasts an updated Lock Screen which contains both visual updates, with new wallpaper options that can set the subject of a photo on top of the time, and functional updates that allow your most important widgets to be viewed without unlocking your phone (such as the weather, an astronomy wallpaper, and many more). iOS16’s updated Messages app allows you to edit or recall recently sent messages and mark messages as unread. New features of iOS16 also include iCloud Shared Photo Library (which will make sharing photo collections easier), Live Text (which recognizes text in video and can convert or translate as necessary), and Visual Look Up (which allows you to tap and hold the subject of an image to lift it from the background and put it into other apps).
Every new phone will also have Emergency SOS via satellite in case of emergencies including Crash Detection. I Phone 14s can detect a severe car crash and will notify your emergency contacts and call 911. The 14s will also introduce the eSIM, doing away with a physical SIM card in favor of a digital version that cannot be removed if a phone is lost or stolen. The eSIM also lets you have multiple phone numbers and data plans on a single phone.
Now let’s get into the specifics!
The iPhone 14/14 Plus
The iPhone 14 (with a 6.1 inch screen) and the iPhone 14 Plus (with a 6.7 inch screen) have an A15 chip with five-core GPU for higher performance. In comparison, the iPhone 13’s A15 only has a four-core GPU. They have three storage options: 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB. The battery life allows for up to 20 hours (iPhone 14) or 26 hours (iPhone 14 Plus) of video playback.
These phones have a dual rear camera with 2x optical zoom, and digital zoom up to 5x. Other camera features include “cinematic mode” which automatically shifts focus to the most important part of any shot, “action mode,” which allows for smoother, steadier videos, and the ability to shoot in 4k at 24fps.
The new TrueDepth front camera has autofocus and a larger aperture, which provides sharp, colorful selfies, even in low light.
The iPhone 14 Pro/14 Pro Max
The iPhone 14 Pro (6.1 inch screen) and the iPhone 14 Pro Max (6.7 inch screen) takes performance even further with a new A16 chip that includes a 5-core CPU 50% more memory bandwidth. The storage options for the Pro phones are 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. The Apple website boasts these phones deliver an “all-day battery life,” allowing for 23 hours of video playback on the iPhone 14 Pro and 29 hours on the iPhone 14 Pro Max. These phones are also introducing a Super Retina XDR display which boasts a peak of 2000 nits outdoors, which means the display is twice as bright as the previous models.
The camera is one of the biggest differences in the Pro series of iPhones. The rear camera has three powerful lenses: the main camera with 48 megapixels, the telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom, and the ultra wide lens with a 120-degree field of view. These allow for better low-light photos and deliver 4x the resolution in ProRAW files. This camera also allows shooting in 4K, but unlike the base 14 phones, you can shoot in either 24 or 30 fps. The Pros also include Action Mode, and the updated TrueDepth front camera.
